Why the roof can drip after the rain stops

Water takes a route through the roof
Shingles shed rain over their overlapping courses. When water gets beneath them at a damaged piece or flashing joint, it can run along the underlayment, deck or framing instead of falling straight down. It then appears where there is an opening or a lower point inside.
That route can take time. Absorbent material can also hold moisture and release it later. A delayed drip is therefore possible without a new shower, but it does not identify the entry point or prove the roof is the only potential source.

The ceiling mark is a clue, not a target
A stain near a chimney can involve flashing, but it could also be water arriving from a different point. Cutting into the ceiling or coating the roof directly over the mark is not a reliable way to establish the route.
A roofer looks for a physical explanation that connects the outside detail to the reported symptom. The surrounding roofing matters too, because repairing an opening requires a sound place for the new work to connect.
A dry afternoon does not prove the leak is fixed
A roof can dry between storms while the failed detail remains. The next wind-driven rain may use the same route. An old stain should not be assumed active, either; the roof assessment needs to distinguish a past problem from a present one.
Once water entry is corrected, damaged interior materials may need their own repair and drying. Roof work and interior restoration are different scopes, even when one caused the need for the other.
